Sauna + Cold Plunge

Heat, then cold, then the part nobody warns you about.

Contrast bathing is the practice of moving between heat and cold in the same sitting. Nordic and Japanese bathing cultures have done it for centuries. It takes about half an hour and it asks nothing of you except that you show up.

01

Heat

Fifteen to twenty minutes, somewhere between 160°F and 195°F depending on the room and how you like it.

02

Cold

One to three minutes, usually somewhere around 45°F. This is the short part and the loud part.

03

Still

Ten minutes of doing nothing at all. Most people skip this one. It is the reason the other two are worth the trouble.

Thirty years I’ve been doing this.

It started in high school, in a tub of ice, and I never stopped. Since then it’s been gyms, clinics that did nothing but heat and cold, a setup at a house I don’t live in anymore. Right now I drive to my brother’s place for it.

That’s the actual reason this company exists. Not because I found something new — because I moved, I don’t have mine yet, and I got tired of going somewhere else to do something I’ve done since high school.

I’m not going to tell you what it will do for you. I don’t know, and neither does anyone who says they do. What I’ll tell you is I come out of it reset, every time, and that after thirty years the cold is still the part I’d miss most.

Mine’s going in the backyard here. That’s why I’d rather sell this than anything else.

Three ways to build it.

A sauna and a plunge, sized to each other and to the space they go in. Buy them as they are, or change either half.

For a family

Four in the sauna, a stainless barrel outside it, and enough chiller to keep up in a Florida summer.
