How Much Space Do You Need for a Home Sauna?

Two measurements decide whether a sauna works in your space, and most people only check one. The first is the footprint of the cabin. The second is whether it can physically get to where it is going.

Footprint by capacity

Outdoor cabins tend to be squarer and taller because they carry their own roof structure. Indoor cabins can be shallower.

Ceiling height

For indoor installations, measure before you fall in love with a model. Most full-height cabins want 7 feet of clear ceiling minimum, and many need 7'3" or more. Basements with ductwork, finished ceilings at 7'0", and garages with low headers are where indoor sauna plans usually die.

Traditional saunas also want the ceiling reasonably close to the top of the cabin. Heat stratifies — the useful heat sits high — and a cabin marooned in a double-height room heats the room rather than the bench.

Clearances

Do not measure only the cabin. Allow:

  • Service access. Space to reach the heater, controls and any electrical connection. Six inches behind is rarely enough; plan on being able to get a person in there.
  • Door swing. Sauna doors swing outward as a safety requirement. That arc has to be clear.
  • Combustible clearance. Every heater publishes minimum distances to walls, benches and guards. These are not suggestions.
  • Outdoor perimeter. Room to walk around the structure for maintenance, plus whatever your local setback rules require from property lines.

Getting it into the room

This is the measurement people skip.

Outdoor saunas ship as flat-packed kits, so the crate goes wherever a pallet can go and the cabin is built on site — the constraint is the delivery path, not the doorway. Indoor cabins often ship as pre-built panels, and those panels have to fit through every doorway, turn and stairwell between the truck and the room.

Measure the narrowest point of the entire path, not just the destination door. Turns are usually tighter than doorways. A 32-inch door with a 90-degree turn into a 36-inch hallway is a harder problem than a 30-inch door on a straight run.

If the cabin has to go downstairs, count the steps — installers price stair carry in bands, typically one to fifteen steps and sixteen to thirty, and it is a real line on the invoice.

Base and siting for outdoor units

An outdoor cabin needs a level, load-bearing base. A five to six person unit can weigh well over 1,000 pounds crated, and considerably more once assembled and occupied. Options in ascending order of cost: an existing concrete patio, a compacted gravel pad, a poured slab.

Also plan for the power run. A detached structure needs a 240V circuit trenched or routed to it, and the distance from your panel is the single largest variable in that cost.
