Infrared vs Traditional Sauna: How to Choose
Most comparisons of infrared and traditional saunas argue about which one is better. That is the wrong question. They are different machines that produce heat in different ways, and the right one depends on your room, your electrical panel, your budget and how you actually plan to use it.
Here is what separates them, in the terms that matter when you are deciding.
The core difference is what gets heated
A traditional sauna heats the air. An electric or wood-fired heater warms a bed of stones, the stones radiate into the room, and the air carries that heat to you. Pour water on the stones and you get a burst of steam — löyly — which raises the perceived heat sharply without changing the thermostat.
An infrared sauna heats you directly. Emitters produce infrared radiation that warms your body without needing to bring the whole room to temperature first. The air stays comparatively cool.

A traditional sauna is a shorter, more intense sitting. An infrared sauna is a longer, milder one. People who find 190°F unpleasant often prefer infrared. People who want the Finnish experience — the steam, the heat gradient, the ritual of it — will not find infrared a substitute, because it isn't one.
Electrical load
This is the difference that decides more purchases than anything else.
Both types generally require a dedicated 240V circuit installed by a licensed electrician before delivery. What varies is the size:
- A traditional heater sized for a two to three person room is typically 6kW, which usually calls for a 240V, 30A circuit.
- A four to six person traditional room typically runs 8kW, usually a 240V, 40A circuit.
- Larger rooms scale up from there.
- Infrared cabins often draw less, and some smaller units run on 120V — though most full-size cabins still want 240V.
Always size the circuit to the manufacturer's published specification for the exact model, and have a licensed electrician confirm your panel has the capacity. A panel that cannot take another 40A circuit turns a sauna purchase into a service upgrade, and that is a conversation you want to have before you order, not after the crate arrives.
Footprint and where it can go
Infrared cabins are usually indoor units. Traditional saunas come in both indoor and outdoor configurations, and outdoor models bring their own requirements — a level base capable of carrying the load, a power run to the location, and clearance around the structure.
Wood-fired traditional heaters add a chimney, clearance requirements, and in many jurisdictions a permit. They are wonderful and they are not a casual purchase.

Materials
Traditional saunas run hotter, so the cabin material matters more. Thermally modified wood — often sold as ThermoWood — is heat-treated softwood that resists moisture, rot and warping better than untreated timber and holds heat well. Cedar and hemlock are both common. Glass, hardware and fasteners all need to be rated for the temperature.
Infrared cabins, running 60 to 80 degrees cooler, are less demanding on materials. Judge them instead on emitter type, emitter coverage, and how the cabin is sealed.
What it costs, honestly
The cabin price is not the price. A traditional sauna typically arrives as a flat-packed kit that has to be assembled on site, the heater is usually sold separately and often ships from a different origin, the 240V circuit is a separate trade, and freight on a unit that can exceed 1,000 pounds is not a parcel delivery.

So which one
Choose traditional if you want the authentic experience, you like real heat and steam, you are siting it outdoors, or the ritual is part of the point.
Choose infrared if you want shorter heat-up times, lower operating temperatures, a smaller electrical draw, or an indoor cabin in a room where a 200°F box is impractical.
Choose both if you are building a room rather than buying a box. Hybrid cabins exist that run infrared emitters alongside a traditional stove, and plenty of built suites carry both as separate elements.
